On
January 24, 2009, YAB members Josh Richards, Devin Altizer, Kaity Albert,
Marissa Clark, Sarah Howlett, and Jordyn Collins met at the First Presbyterian
Church Manse for a YAB Retreat. They took this time to address problems with
drug and alcohol abuse in our community, especially concerning the youth of
Pulaski County. As well as addressing problems, ideas were circulated among the
group to find solutions to these problems. Drugs in sports and extracurricular
activities, youth involvement in the county, and the perception of drug and
alcohol abuse along with parent awareness were discussed. Some ways of
preventing abuse included monthly drug and alcohol free events for the youth.
Formal dinners giving information to both parents and their children, sending
youthful brochures with information to parents, and providing stress classes
were among the ideas brought to the table. The meeting gave a great chance for
the youth to brainstorm ways to prevent their
peers
from abusing drugs and alcohol.
